____________________________________________________________________________________SCRIPTURE
1 Peter 5: 6-7
Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
________________________________________________________________________________COMMENTARY
Stress affects every aspect of our lives, our emotions, our ability to think, our physical health, and our spiritual well-being. Even though stress will always be a part of our lives, we can learn how to manage it biblically.
In this scripture, along with many others, we can find ways to reduce our stress the biblical way. One of the biggest subjects in the book of first Peter deals with a Christians ability to separate from the world and turn to God. We as Christians know how to alleviate stress from our lives, but we choose not to use the power of the Holy Spirit to help us. The further we go outside of God’s guidance, the closer we edge toward a life of frustration, anxiety, fear, and unrest. Obedience is the key ingredient through the entire word of God to reduce stress.
In this passage of scripture Peter writes that the disobedience in our lives begins with our desire to become, or to appear to be something we aren’t, or to exalt ourselves. A majority of the time with scripture we can find out how to be obedient from doing the opposite. With this scripture we can examine it that very way. The solution to stress is to humble ourselves under God’s mighty hand and realize that He has the right to rule over our lives.
When we do, God will bless us and exalt us because we are willing to submit to His plan and will. In verse six Peter tells us that God will work things out in His time. How often do we add more stress to our lives because we are trying to do things ourselves instead of letting God work things out? To make yourself a humble servant means you trust God with everything in your life, even with those unavoidable situations.
__________________________________________________________________________LIFE APPLICATION
God does not expect that we are going to have lives with no stress, but God wants to know how we are going to handle that stress. There are so many false idols in this world that will make you feel good for a season, but these things are only temporary. Trusting in God with every situation in your life is the only way to manage that stress.
Jesus himself knew incredible stress while He was on this earth. In the Gospels it tells us every time that Jesus faced opposition or stress He went and prayed. Christ found relief from the pressures of this life by getting away and going to be with the Father. I know that we can too.
God knows every area of our life. He is an intimate God who even knows every hair on our head. He is willing to fight your battles and bear your burdens for you.
This week make a list of each area of concern that adds a lot of stress in your life. Take the time to pray diligently about each one. Take confidence that the Lord is going to help you in each one of these areas. Things may be very difficult in our lives, but remember nothing is too hard for Him.
